ALTHEA DANCE COMPANY -  SOLOÏDE
In residency

Paris
France

My collaboration with Althea was my first time documenting the development of a dance show, during a month of residency.

I came twice per week during an entire session, in order to learn the choregraphy myself, which would be necessary due to the limited time allowed to photograph the dancers on stage.

With this experience, I discovered a strong interest for dance, and a desire to find more people to collaborate with in that field.

On stage, last rehearsal

All these photographs were taken during the last rehearsal of the show. The only moment when the full production was accessible, including costumes and light show, and when it wasn’t problematic to have a photographer on stage with the artists.

I had only a single shot at documenting certain moves the way I wanted to - I wanted to produce complex, layered images, inspired by my street photography practice. So I needed to know the relative positions of each dancers to the others, more or less at all times.

Considering the speed of the movement, and the complexity of the choregraphy, spending time with the dancers during the residency was the only way to make sure I could pull it off in just one go.
