WHATEVER
Improvised photoshoot during residency

Bellot
France

Shortly after the collaboration with Althea, I had the opportunity to apply the same process to the development of a play.  So I came during the residency, and photographed the last rehearsal, on stage with them. The play revolved around a group of British and Irish punks in a squat, during the 70’s.
During the residency, we took a walk together in the forest and found an abandoned house and warehouse. I proposed to return to the house on the following day, as it felt like the perfect setting to take photographs.
I asked the actors to wear their costumes, to explore the space, to improvise in character.
In the warehouse, we found an absurd quantity of small balls of polystyrene. I asked the actors to use their bodies, to not be afraid of being dramatic with their gestures, and to completely let go.
We spent a few hours improvising together. It was a lot of fun.

The play’s scenography and light shows were in the end very minimalistic.
It was extremely impressive to witness the curve of finalization of a theatre piece - where Althea’s dance show was a very progressive development,  the actors and their characters really revealed themselves in the last days before the first representation.
It was a very interesting experience overall that I would like to reiterate.
